National Night Out (NNO), "America's Night Out Against Crime," was introduced by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW) in 1984. The program was the brainchild of NATW Executive Director Matt A. Peskin.

The NATW is a nonprofit crime prevention organization which works in cooperation with thousands of crime watch groups and law enforcement agencies throughout the country. Since 1981, NATW has been dedicated to the development, grown and maintenance of organized crime and drug prevention programs nationwide.

While the traditional "lights on" and front porch vigils remain a part of NNO, activities have expanded considerably over the years to include block parties, cookouts, parades, visits from police, festivals, neighborhood walks, safety fairs, contests, rallies and meetings.

NNO is traditionally celebrated on the 1st Tuesday in August (Aug. 3rd this year). However, in 2017, City Ordinance #70609 moved the National Night Out date in the City of St. Louis to the first Tuesday in October (Oct. 5th this year). The 2020 event was postponed due to COVID-19 considerations.

To register your 2021 NNO event, check the stlouis-mo.gov website starting August 9th.
