Some people say the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) epidemic is not a big deal any more.  After all, there are medications to treat it now and people are living longer with this disease than when HIV was originally discovered over 30 years ago.  However, for some individuals, not only is the HIV/AIDS epidemic a big deal, but it is having a huge impact in their communities.

 

The National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day is one of the efforts targeted to bring awareness to this threat and help reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS through education, testing and access to treatment resources.  On February 7, 2012, the City of St. Louis Department of Health will be sponsoring an HIV/AIDS Awareness Day in the First Floor Conference Room at 1520 Market Street from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  During this event, participants will have access to free and confidential HIV and sexually-transmitted disease (STD) testing, blood pressure checks, and be able to speak with a pharmacist regarding medications.  Experienced specialists will also be on hand to talk about STDs. Additionally, there will be snacks and plenty of give-aways for all participants. 

The statistics show that there are more than 5,000 individuals living with HIV in the St. Louis region with Blacks representing over 50% of all cases.  This event represents an opportunity to begin to change those numbers and have a positive impact on the overall health of this community.  You are invited to be a part of that change.  Come on out and invite a friend.  Let's get educated, get tested, get involved and get treated!  For more information, contact (314) 612-5188.
