St. Louis Fire Chief Dennis Jenkerson announced last month that the Department has received a $789,000 grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Homeland Security. The grant will outfit St. Louis Fire Dept. vehicles with computer technology that will help firefighters and EMS crews know what they'll face before they arrive on the scene.
The computer will provide them access to information such as what type of structure to which they are headed, if it's a business, what type of business, if there are hazardous materials on site, etc.
Chief Jenkerson also said that with the system, dispatchers will be able to tell exactly where fire engines are located so they can best deploy personnel to an incident location.
The new system is expected to be up and running within six months.
