Preparation
Ensure you meet the requirements to become an EMS Dispatcher:
- Some experience in emergency public safety services, dispatching, or customer service in a call center work environment
OR, completion of a recognized dispatcher training program
OR, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience - Must obtain a current Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) certification issued by the National Academies of Emergency Medical Dispatch by the end of their working test period and maintain it while employed by the City of St. Louis.

Some positions may require candidates to pass a Character Investigation prior to appointment.
Candidates will be required to pass an oral swab Drug Screen Test as part of the Medical examination. Incumbents are subject to random Drug Screen and Alcohol Tests as a condition of their employment.

- Education: A high school diploma or General Educational Development (G.E.D.) certificate.
- One year of recent full-time paid dispatching experience
OR
One year of customer service experience in a call center work environment
