The Committee of Electrical Examiners reviews electrical certification and licensing matters for the City of St. Louis.
Overview
The Committee of Electrical Examiners manages the award of electrical certification. The Committee determines, through written and oral examination, whether applicants have the knowledge and experience required to receive certificates and licenses to engage in electrical work in the City of St. Louis.
The Committee consists of five members appointed by the Mayor. Members must be City residents and at least 21 years old. Ordinance 58032 authorizes the Committee.
Committee Makeup
The Committee includes:
- One Journeyman Electrician with at least five years of experience in the electrical business
- One Licensed Electrical Contractor continuously engaged in electrical contracting for at least five years
- One Registered Professional Engineer specializing in electrical engineering
- One Registered Architect
- One public at-large member

Members are appointed to four-year terms, except appointments made to fill vacancies, which serve the remainder of the unexpired term. Members continue serving until a successor or reappointment has been made.
The Committee selects one member to serve as Chair. Members are compensated $45 per meeting for up to 15 meetings per year.
Functions of the Committee
The Committee of Electrical Examiners is responsible for:
- Reviewing applicants for electrical certificates and licenses
- Conducting written and oral examinations
- Testing applicants’ knowledge, skill, ability, and competency in practical electrical installations
- Evaluating knowledge of electrical theory and practice
- Evaluating knowledge of the St. Louis Electrical Code
- Recommending certificates and licenses for applicants who successfully pass the required examinations
- Maintaining examination results as public records available for inspection
