Sprinkler System Contractors Board of Examiners
The Sprinkler System Contractors Board of Examiners reviews licensing matters, apprentice applications, complaints, and other business related to sprinkler system contractors and sprinkler fitters in the City of St. Louis.
Overview
The Sprinkler System Contractors Board of Examiners oversees the licensing and regulation of sprinkler system contractors and sprinkler fitters performing work within the City of St. Louis. The Board reviews license applications, hears complaints, approves apprentice applications, and conducts other lawful business related to fire suppression sprinkler systems.
The Board consists of five members appointed in accordance with City ordinance. Three members are appointed by the Mayor with approval of the Board of Aldermen, and two members serve by virtue of their positions within the City.
The Board is authorized by Ordinances 58032, 66615, and 69255.
Board Makeup
The Board consists of five members, including:
- One licensed employing sprinkler contractor
- One registered professional engineer with experience in fire suppression sprinkler system design
- One licensed journeyman sprinkler fitter
- The Fire Marshal or the Fire Marshal's appointed representative
- The Building Commissioner or the Building Commissioner's appointed representative
The three appointed members must:
- Be residents of the City of St. Louis
- Be United States citizens
- Have been actively engaged in the sprinkler systems trade or business for at least five years in the St. Louis metropolitan area
Members appointed by the Mayor serve four-year terms or until their successors are appointed and qualified.
The Board may include up to five members. Appointments require approval by the Board of Aldermen.

Functions of the Board
The Board of Examiners is responsible for:
- Reviewing and approving or denying applications for sprinkler contractor and journeyman sprinkler fitter licenses.
- Reviewing and approving apprentice sprinkler fitter applications.
- Prescribing the administration, format, and content of licensing examinations.
- Hearing and determining complaints involving licensed sprinkler contractors and sprinkler fitters.
- Conducting investigations and hearings regarding disciplinary matters.
- Revoking or suspending licenses when authorized by City Code.
- Ordering inspections of sprinkler systems when necessary to protect public safety.
- Advising on rules and regulations governing the installation, inspection, and maintenance of fire suppression sprinkler systems.
- Determining the qualifications of applicants seeking licensing, registration, or certification.
