Health Alert - FDA Advises To Stop Using Certain Claire’s Products

The City of St. Louis Department of Health is notifying residents that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is advising consumers not to use certain Claire’s products because they may be contaminated with asbestos fibers. Inhalation of asbestos over time has been linked to serious adverse health consequences.

Small asbestos fibers cannot be seen, smelled or tasted, and asbestos exposure does not cause any immediate symptoms, so it is easy for a person to inhale or swallow asbestos dust without realizing it. Once asbestos fibers are in the body, they never dissolve, and the body has difficulty getting rid of them. Over time, asbestos fibers in the body can cause inflammation, scarring and eventually genetic damage to body cells.

Testing ordered by the FDA revealed asbestos in samples of the following Claire’s products:

• Claire’s Eye Shadows
• Claire’s Compact Power
• Claire’s Contour Palette

Claire’s has initiated a voluntary recall of the products but individuals may still have them in their possession and in their homes. Consumers who have purchased these products should discontinue use and return the remaining product to a Claire’s store. The company is offering a full refund.

Although the FDA has reported that it is not aware of any actual adverse health reactions associated with these products the agency is advising consumers to be extremely cautious and stop using all three products.
