The American Cancer Society is inviting all smokers to participate in the 37th Annual Great American Smokeout on Thursday, November 21.  "Smoking cessation (stopping smoking) represents the single most important step that smokers can take to enhance the length and quality of their lives," says the U.S. Surgeon General.

Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S., yet nearly one in every five adults still smokes cigarettes.  By quitting -- even for one day -- smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life -- one that can lead to reduced cancer risk.

If you are a smoker and want to quit, you don't have to do it alone.  Plan now to join thousands of Americans on Nov. 21 as they kick the habit.  There is no one right way to quit, but there are four key factors for quitting success:

  • make the decision to quit
  • set a quit date and choose a quit plan
  • determine what strategies you will use to deal with withdrawal
  • create your maintenance plan to stay quit
