City Counselor Patricia "Patti" Hageman and Paul Brown, a partner with Thompson Coburn, were honored last month with 2013 Spirit of Justice Awards by the Saint Louis Bar Foundation for their work on the Lawyers for City Neighborhoods initiative.
The growing docket of problem properties cases has been a challenge for the City Counselor's Office staff, and City Counselor Hageman had a goal to involve lawyers who were not currently doing pro bono legal work, to volunteer to help improve the quality of life in St. Louis neighborhoods, fight nuisance property crimes, and crack down on absentee landlords and others who maintain derelict property.
Paul Brown stepped forward to lead this group that recruits and trains Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis (BAMSL) lawyers to provide pro bono legal work to help reduce the overloaded docket of problem properties. The initiative has had a noticeable impact -- not only on many City neighborhoods and for City residents, but for the many BAMSL volunteer lawyers who have found satisfaction in helping strengthen the community.
