Municipal Garage Manager Judy L. Armstrong has a reminder for all city employees who drive on City business (city vehicle or personal vehicle) that it is mandatory for them to take the Defensive Driving Course every three years which is offered through TODD.  Starting on July 1, 2014, city employees will not be able to use a City pool car from the Municipal Garage if they have not taken this class within the last three years.

The Defensive Driving Course also covers the City's policy on distracted driving, which reads as follows:

Employees operating a City vehicle or any vehicle being used for City business are banned from participating in any activity while driving which will create a visual distraction, cognitive distraction, or manual distraction.  This specifically precludes the use of cell phones or other devices to answer or make phone calls, reading, initiating or responding to emails, and text messages, adjusting global positioning system and accessing the Internet.

Similar language is found in the City's Vehicle Policy Manual:

To protect you and the City of St. Louis, please do not use your cell phone or any other device that will cause you to take your eyes, hands and/or mind off of driving while driving.

Cell phone distracted driving causes nearly one in four car crashes turning this into a national epidemic.  National Highway Traffic Safety Administration statistics for 2010 show that 20% of all crashes involve distracted driving, 6,000 people killed and 500,000 were injured in distracted driving collisions.  Distracted driving is equal to driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08%.

Also, please remember that smoking is not allowed in any City vehicle or building.
