The tip of the week from our friends at Gateway Greening recommends that we start our summer seedlings now.

"With snow on the ground and cold, cloudy weather in the forecast, the dismal days of late February are perfect for sowing pepper, eggplant, and tomato seeds. These plants take a month or more of solid growth to prepare them for a garden planting."

According to the item, the last frost date in St. Louis should be around April 15. Adding another two weeks to be sure our freezing temperatures have passed would give us a first planting date around the end of April or the first of May. We also need to keep in mind that the soil should be about 60 degrees F for the best growth. Therefore, keeping indoor-plants in their containers for a maximum of 8 weeks gives us a starting date of this week.

Happy seed sowing!
