Overview

Type: Community Event

Admission: Free.

Description

Community members are invited to celebrate Black history at Missouri’s first nationally recognized Underground Railroad site, the historic Mary Meachum Freedom Crossing on the Mississippi Greenway. The event will include educational entertainment in the form of a historical re-enactment and plays portraying three different enslaved families and their escape journeys, including one by horse and wagon! All ages are welcome to witness and reflect how enslaved people and their allies risked it all in pursuit of basic freedoms. The free celebration on the banks of the Mississippi River will include a community bike ride with Trailnet at noon, programs on the stage from 1-4 p.m. featuring live music, gospel choirs and the main re-enactment event at 3 p.m. Local vendors will have food, drinks, goods and crafts for purchase. Family-friendly activities and games include magnetic poetry, yard games and activities from partners.
