Description
Our ‘Voices of Change’ season climaxes with a series of works advocating for equality between genders and races, and it champions new additions to the choral repertoire. No fewer than six of the works on the program have been written in the past ten years, culminating in a world premiere from Maria Granillo, our new ‘Composer-in-Residence,’ who teaches at the National University of Mexico. We have chosen a venue fitting this celebration of female artists, as The Link Auditorium started out life as The Wednesday Club of St. Louis, which had been created for a study group of women eager to educate themselves beyond the chauvinist walls of many schools in St. Louis. Artists like Sara Teasdale visited here, so it’s fitting that the chorus sings Howard Helvey’s madrigals that set her verses. At this concert, on Sunday, May 31, at 3 pm, various ‘unsung contributions’ of women in history also find a voice, from settings of Maya Angelou, to an African American spiritual arranged by Undine Smith Moore, and from three 19th century German lieder by Fanny Hensel, Clara Shumann and Agnes Tyrrell, all the way back to a chant created nearly a millennium ago by the German nun, Hildegard of Bingen. That such repertoire is still a rarity in 2026 is regrettable, but it makes this program all the more valuable, indeed essential.More Information
