Overview, preparation and instructions to apply for a Sports and Entertainment Events Business License

Overview

Your business requires a Graduated Business License (GBL).

There is a 5% tax of gross receipts collected on admissions to sport and entertainment events.

 

Instructions

Step 1: Obtain State Sales Tax Number

Register with the State of Missouri for a State Sales Tax Number and obtain this number before visiting City Hall.

Step 2: Complete the Gross Receipts Tax Form

Visit the License Collector’s office in Room 104 of City Hall to complete the gross receipts tax form.

Step 3: Obtain Statement of Clearance

In addition to visiting the License Collector’s office, you will also need to obtain a clearance from the Collector of Revenue’s office at the location below:

Step 4: Obtain Occupancy Permit

You must also obtain an Occupancy Permit from the Building Division at the location below:

Step 5: License Bond

Provide a cash deposit or a License Bond for a sum equal to the Collector's estimate of the actual tax to become due.

Step 6: Pay Fees by the Due Date

On single events (Non Quarterly Filing Establishments) the fee is due within 15 days of the event.

For a single instance or limited time business, the tax is due to be filed and paid within 48 hours of the event.

 

What to Expect

Once all clearances and payments are received, you will be able to obtain your license to do business in the City of St. Louis.

 

Additional Information

If you pay by check, the license application may be held for several working days until the check clears.

A separate Graduated Business License is required for each business location or trade name (St. Louis City Ordinance 52030).
