Information on how to obtain a Graduated Business License in the City

Overview

Any person who engages in any business within the City Limits of St. Louis is required to have a business license.

Preparation

Gather Information

Be prepared to provide extensive details on your business, including:

  • Business email address
  • EIN/Fed or ID/SSN (Federal EIN is preferred, see the IRS website)
  • Trade name
  • True name
  • Structure address (P.O. box is not allowed)
  • Number of employees
  • Business owner information (Name, SSN, date of birth, address, email, phone number)
  • Business contact information if different than the owner
  • Driver's license information (number, expiration, state)

Obtain State Sales Tax Number

If you are selling a product, you must register with the State of Missouri for a State Sales Tax Number. Register with the State of Missouri for a State Sales Tax Number and obtain this number before registering for your GBL.

If you are not selling a product, proceed to step 2.

Instructions

Submit Application

A separate Graduated Business License is required for each business location or trade name. You can submit your application online or in person.

Obtain Statement of Clearance

In addition to applying for your license, you will also need to obtain a clearance statement from the Collector of Revenue’s office, indicating that all your city taxes are paid.

Obtain Occupancy Permit

If your business is located in the City of St. Louis, you must also obtain an Occupancy Permit from the Building Division.

Fees

View the fees for obtaining a Graduated Business License.

If you pay by check, the license application may be held for several working days until the check clears.

What to Expect

The License Collector's office will review your application and keep in touch with you regarding additional requirements, payment and final steps. 

Once all clearances and payments are received, you will be able to obtain your license to do business in the City of St. Louis.
