Disaster Recovery Jobs Program

SLATE’s Disaster Recovery Jobs Program is funded to support tornado recovery in St. Louis through temporary employment, fair wages, and supportive services for eligible residents.

The St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment (SLATE) has received $1.5 million in tornado recovery funding from the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development (MDHEWD) to assist residents impacted by the May 16, 2025 tornado in the St. Louis region. The funding is part of a $4 million Disaster Recovery National Dislocated Worker Grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor to support disaster recovery through temporary employment.

Through the Disaster Recovery Jobs Program, SLATE plans to hire up to 105 individuals for temporary recovery-related positions paying up to $20 per hour for up to 12 months (or 2,080 hours). Participants will be enrolled in the WIOA Dislocated Worker Program and may receive supportive services.

SLATE will work with City of St. Louis departments to support cleanup and recovery projects, including debris removal, site preparation, repairs, and restoration of damaged properties and public spaces.

Who Is Eligible?

To take part in the program, individuals must meet eligibility requirements for the WIOA Dislocated Worker Program. In general, this program serves people who:

  • Lost employment because of the tornado or related economic impacts

  • Are unemployed or underemployed

  • Are not likely to return to their previous occupation

Eligibility is determined according to federal policy under the National Dislocated Worker Grant program.
