Overview
Vehicles that are larger than the measurements below are oversized and require an Overdimensional Permit to drive on the streets of the City. Applications for overdimensional permits will require you to declare the size/weight of the vehicle as well as the route of the transport.
Preparation
Requirements
Ensure that your vehicle is overdimensional and requires the permit:
- 9 ft and over in width OR
- 15 ft and over in height OR
- 50 ft and over in length for a single unit OR
- 75 ft and over in length for a combination unit.
- 22,400 pounds per axle is allowed before a unit is considered overweight.
Transports exceeding 18' in width OR 110' in length will require applicant to also provide the axle weights (ie: weight of load over EACH axle or SET of axles, and how many axles in each SET if applicable).
Escorts
Determine the number of escorts you will need.
- ONE ESCORT vehicle is required for moves in which the width is over 10'4" OR length exceeds 50' for a single unit or 75' for a combination unit. Escort travels in front of the transport vehicle.
- TWO ESCORT vehicles required for moves in which the width is 14' or more, OR the length is 90' or more. One escort travels in front, one in back.
Assemble Information
When applying for the permit, you will be asked to provide:
- Start date of conveyance
- Object to be transported
- Truck/tractor make and year
- Trailer make and year
- Height
- Weight
- Width
- Length
- Axle weights (if > 18' wide or > 110" long)
- Route, turn by turn, of the conveyance
- a Certificate of Insurance naming the City of St. Louis as additional insured

Fees
- Overdimensional permits cost $25.00 and are good for 7 days.
- You can make as many trips as needed, if all specifications are identical, within the 7 day time period.
- Make a payment to the Street Department.
What to Expect
- After submitting your application, you will receive a confirmation email and an application ID number. You can monitor the status of your application by entering your application number on the Track and Manage a Case, Permit, or License page.
- We will review your application and check for any unpaid invoices you or your company might owe to the city. If all is in order, we will approve your permit for issue.
- Upon approval of your application, the Street Department will email you that your permit is ready for pick up and payment (if not pre-paid) or we will email you your permit number (if pre-paid). Make a payment to the Street Department.
Additional Information
Permits issued by the City of St. Louis Street Department are for streets in the City of St Louis ONLY. If transporting on interstates in Missouri, please contact the Missouri Department of Transportation for proper permits.
