Apply for a Commercial Loading Zone Permit

A Commercial Loading Zone Permit allows businesses to convert metered parking spots into zones for loading and unloading commercial vehicles.

Overview

A commercial business may apply for a commercial loading zone. The sole purpose of the loading zone shall be for loading or unloading commercial vehicles.

Commercial loading zone permits must be renewed each year. Loading zone signs are placed on the premises once permits are issued.

Preparation

It is recommended that businesses coordinate with nearby neighbors, business associations, and CIDs to determine the location of commercial loading zones.

Before you apply for a new permit, you must have the following:

  • The address of your business
  • The number of metered parking spots you will need to replace with your loading zone
  • The length of the curb you are requesting for your loading zone (used to calculate fees).

Renew an Existing Permit

Each permit expires on December 31st of the year for which the permit was issued. If you wish to renew your loading zone permit, you must submit your application and fee before December 31st. If your permit is not renewed, the Traffic Commissioner will remove your commercial loading zone signs.

Fees

Once your application has been approved, you may pay your fees:

  • $2.00 per foot of the curb lane of the loading zone
  • $50.00 for the original sign installation (new applications only)

Your approval notification will include payment instructions.

City ordinance 57831 outlines the fees.

What to Expect

Once your application has been received:

  • a Street Department inspector will conduct a survey of traffic conditions in the area.
  • The Traffic Control Supervisor will review the needs of your business with respect to the loading and unloading of freight merchandise, materials or property on the public street or alleys.
  • If your loading zone permit is approved, the Traffic Commissioner shall issue an annual permit for a commercial loading zone.
