ST. LOUIS PUBLIC LIBRARY CELEBRATES OLDER AMERICANS MONTH IN MAY

 

The St. Louis Public Library is proud to host programs throughout May in celebration of Older Americans Month 2014.  The national theme this year is Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrowwhich encourages older folks to stay healthy and active. All events are FREE and open to the public.

This year, the Library's Older Americans Month programming includes:

 

·      Senior Film Series"Hollywood's Salute to Older Americans."  Films are shown at the Buder Branch, 4401 Hampton Ave., every Wednesday from 1:30-3:30 p.m.

 

·      Seniors and Driving: When It's Time to Put Away the KeysMedical and highway patrol experts discuss how seniors can drive more safely, how caregivers can determine when it is no longer safe for their seniors to drive, and how families can help seniors deal with the feelings of a loss of independence at the Walnut Park Branch, 5760 W. Florissant Ave., on May 3 from 1-3 p.m.

 

·      The St. Louis Senior Olympics—Phil Ruben, the St. Louis Senior Olympics Director, discusses how to volunteer, participate, and sponsorship opportunities at the Julia Davis Branch, 4415 Natural Bridge Ave., on May 10 from 2-4 p.m.

 

·      The History of Line DancingLearn the history of line dancing and the benefits of exercising. Practice your line dancing skills, learn new steps, and enjoy music at the Carpenter Branch, 3309 S. Grand Blvd., on May 12 from 6-7 p.m.

 

·      Zumba Fitness Class—Fitness Instructor RJ teaches the art of Zumba, new dance moves, and how to tone up. All skill levels welcome at the Julia Davis Branch, 4415 Natural Bridge Ave., on May 13 from 6-7 p.m.

 

·      Identity Theft: Can It Happen to Me?—Daniel Rechtien presents a workshop especially for senior citizens at the Cabanne Branch, 1106 Union Blvd., on May 14 from 12:30-1:30 p.m.

 

·      Michael's Magical Moments—Sister Michael Therese, CSJ, performs magic tricks at theMachacek Branch, 6424 Scanlan Ave., on May 14 from 1-2 p.m.

 

·      Memories of St. Louis: The HillSlide show of historical photos. Learn about influential Hill residents, and enjoy reminiscences of people who grew up in the iconic St. Louis neighborhood at the Kingshighway Branch, 2260 S. Vandeventer Ave., on May 14 from 3-4 p.m.

 

·      STL Village presents Age of Champions—STL Village shows the award-winning documentary, Age of Champions, followed by a panel discussion featuring St. Louis Senior Olympians Liz Heller, Myrle Mensey, Mike Murray, and Dr. Edward Wolfgram.  The documentary explores these inspiring competitors who sprint, leap, and swim for gold at the National Senior Olympics at the Schlafly Branch, 225 N. Euclid Ave., on May 15 from 4-6 p.m.

 

·      St. Louis Area Agency on Aging—SLAAA provides information about resources & referrals for seniors & adults ages 18-59 with disabilities at the Barr Branch, 1701 S. Jefferson Ave., on May 20 from 12:15-1:15 p.m.

 

·      Have I Got a Deal for You! Fraud Prevention Tips—Daniel Rechtien of the St. Louis Circuit Attorney's Fraud Prevention Taskforce presents the necessary tools for seniors to protect themselves at the Divoll Branch, 4234 N. Grand Blvd., on May 20 from 2-3:30 p.m.  Receive a FREE Predatory Lending Handbook (while supplies last).

 

·      Can I Catch That?  2014 Consumer Health Information Speaker Series

Cardio Health: Risks, Intervention, and Prevention—Dr. Angela Brown, Pharmacist Anastasia Armbruster, Herbalist Rachel Davis, and other leading local healthcare professionals discuss cardiovascular health at Central Library, 1301 Olive St., on May 27 from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
