- Dr. Tullia Brown Hamilton discusses and signs her new book, Up From Canaan. The event takes place at the Julia Davis Branch, 4415 Natural Bridge Ave., on June 7 at 6 p.m.
Still in existence today, Mound Bayou, Mississippi, is a vibrant all-black town founded by freed slaves after the Civil War. When the community fell on hard times, many residents joined the Great Migration north in search of better lives. Some stopped in St. Louis and stayed for good.
Brown Hamilton has a Ph.D. from Emory University in American Studies. Her frequently cited dissertation remains one of the seminal scholarly works in the history of African-American women.

Only a few years before becoming a famous actress and icon, fifteen-year-old Louise Brooks leaves Wichita to make it big in New York. Much to her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone, Cora Carlisle. A complicated but traditional woman, Cora has no idea what she's in for. Ultimately, the five weeks they spend together will change their lives forever.
Moriarty is the author of The Center of Everything, The Rest of Her Life, and While I'm Falling.
