Fire Watch Requirements and Notification
In accordance with St. Louis City Ordinance 70796 and the 2018 International Fire Code (IFC), a Fire Watch must be established when a building’s fire protection systems are impaired or when specific hazards are present. A Fire Watch involves dedicated personnel providing continuous surveillance to identify fire hazards, detect early signs of fire, and notify the Fire Department immediately in an emergency.
Per the IFC, a Fire Watch is generally required for:
- System Impairments (Section 901.7): When fire alarm or sprinkler systems are out of service.
- Hot Work (Section 3504.2): During and after welding, cutting, or open-flame operations.
- Public Assemblies (Section 403.12.1): At large events where the Fire Code Official deems it necessary for life safety.
Personnel Duties
Assigned individuals must have no other responsibilities during their watch. They are required to maintain a written log of patrols, which must be available for review by the Fire Marshal's Office (Section 403.112.1.2).
