Smoke Detectors and Nuisance Alarms
Information on the City of St. Louis's free smoke detector program for resident homeowners and the penalties for commercial business owners with faulty alarm systems.
Smoke Detectors
Smoke detectors are very important for your home. They are like a nose that stays awake while you sleep. If a fire starts, the detector makes a loud beep to wake you up. This gives you and your family enough time to get outside safely. Having a working smoke detector is the best way to keep your family safe and protect your home from fire.
If you own and reside in your home in the city, you can get a smoke detector for free! We want every house to be safe for the people living there. If you need a smoke detector, please (314) 533-3406 to learn more. We are here to help you keep your home safe.
Nuisance Alarms
When a fire alarm proves to be unfounded, valuable time is wasted and resources are pulled away from where they may be truly needed. To reduce the number of these nuisance alarms, the St. Louis Fire Department and City Ordinance levy fines on owners whose properties have multiple calls of this nature.
Maintenance Responsibility
- Operating Standards - Property owners and occupants are legally responsible for maintaining fire suppression, detection, and alarm systems in conditions that prevent unnecessary transmissions.
- Expedient Correction - Remedies to correct system malfunctions or environmental triggers must be accomplished as quickly as possible.
Enforcement and Fee Structure
The City of St. Louis utilizes a structured monitoring period to encourage system reliability while allowing for initial repairs.
- Initial Notification: Following a verified nuisance alarm (e.g., system malfunction), a formal warning notice is issued.
- Grace Period: A two-week grace period is granted to the owner immediately following the initial alarm to identify the cause and perform corrective maintenance.
- Monitoring Window: A six-month monitoring period is established following the initial incident.
- Service Assessments: If the Fire Department responds to a subsequent nuisance alarm within this six-month window, a $100.00 service fee is assessed for each response.
- Enforcement Reset: The process only resets once a system has successfully operated for six consecutive months without a nuisance alarm
Paying Fines
The Fire Marshal’s office processes nuisance alarm fines twice monthly and sends invoices to alert owners. All fines must be paid within 30 days of issuance. Payment is accepted by check or money order made out to City of St. Louis. Please mail to the address on the invoice.
