Overview
The Gateway ID Card is a free municipal identification card for City of St. Louis residents. The ID card is a source of civic pride and provides a safe, accessible form of identification for residents.
The Gateway ID Card helps residents access city-administered services, encourages the support of local businesses, and allows residents to participate more fully in the economic and civic life of our city.
About the Gateway ID Card
The Gateway ID program, created by Ordinance 71953, ensures that all City residents are able to obtain a government-issued ID, which will help them access much-needed services and resources, such as housing, healthcare and education.
Card Details
The Gateway ID Card contains:
- Cardholder’s name
- Photograph
- Address
- Date of birth
- Height
- Eye color
- Gender
- Gateway ID Card identification number
- Expiration date
Card Benefits
The Gateway ID Card can be used to access services administered by the City of St. Louis. Additionally, the Gateway ID Card can be used to acquire a St. Louis Public Library card, and to open an account at participating financial institutions.
Gateway ID Card holders can also receive discounted goods and services from certain local businesses.
Card Limitations
The Gateway ID Card cannot be used for:
- Voting
- Purchasing age-restricted products (alcohol, tobacco, cannabis, etc.)
- Boarding domestic or international flights
- Federal identification purposes
Privacy and Data Protection
Protecting the privacy of Gateway ID Card holders is a top priority. The program retains only limited demographic information such as:
- ZIP code
- Type of documents used to verify identity
- Type of documents used to verify residency
- Ethnicity (Hispanic or Latino / Not Hispanic or Latino)
- Race
- Gateway ID Card number
- Housing status
- Referral source
All application materials are handled securely by trained staff. Physical applications are placed in a secure shred bin after processing. No copies of documents are retained, and all original documents are returned to applicants.
