Lambert-St. Louis International Airport announced a major art project as part of a kickoff to $50 million in renovations to its historic Terminal 1 and connecting concourses.
Lambert will install art glass screens in Concourses A & C during a year-long renovation project that begins December 1. Renovations projects in Terminal 1 will begin in the spring of 2011. The Airport renovations and the creation of Lambert’s Public Art and Culture Project are part of the Airport Experience Program which began in 2008.
Nine local artists are now designing concepts for the art glass screens, which are the first public art commissions for Lambert within its new Public Art and Culture Project. The selected artists are Lauren Adams (St. Louis, MO); Sarah Giannobile (St. Louis, MO); Joan Hall (St. Louis, MO); Jana Harper (Clayton, MO); Tom Huck (University City, MO); William LaChance (Maplewood, MO); Eva Lundsager (University City, MO); Edna Patterson-Petty (East St. Louis, IL) and Mel Watkin (Cobden, IL).
“We have a wealth of artistic talent in our community and this project is a great first step to enhance the Airport experience, foster civic pride and create a positive lasting impression of St. Louis for our visitors,” said Lambert Director Rhonda Hamm-Niebruegge. "The glass screens will offer bursts of color and creativity that will give our renovated concourses new and exciting focal points for our travelers."
The artists for this project were chosen from a competitive call to artists, selected by the Airport’s new Art Advisory Committee with a focus on their past artistic works and the best artistic styles that would translate into glass. Each artist will create designs for three side-by-side glass panels measuring 5.5 ft. high by 3 ft. wide, with an overall glass "canvas" of nearly 50 square feet. The first art glass screens are scheduled to be installed by the spring of 2011.
"The nine selected regional artists represent a wide variety of contemporary artistic styles. The result will be an exciting and diverse collection of nine works created specifically for Lambert," said Jill McGuire, Executive Director of the Regional Art Commission and member of the Airport’s Art Advisory Committee. "It is wonderful to see Lambert’s commitment to enriching its public spaces with art."
The renovation of Lambert’s A & C Concourses begins Phase II of the Airport Experience Program. The interior roof structure of the concourses and all metal surfaces (doors, columns, air supply ducts) will be painted to coordinate with new tile flooring, new ceilings and a more efficient circular pendant lighting system. All concourse restrooms will be updated with Terrazzo flooring, new wall tile, new countertops and sink fixtures. The Airport will also install new signage and directories.
Improvements in Terminal 1 will begin in spring of 2011. Projects include new ticket counters, new baggage claim restrooms, expanded C Concourse security checkpoint, new ceilings, improved lighting systems and new signage.
Lambert is committing a total of $70 million for all projects in the Airport Experience Program. The first phase of projects accounted for $20 million in projects. Lambert has completed the installation of a new baggage system in Terminal 1 and the interior restoration of the terminal’s domed ceilings. The domes now feature skylights with programmable LED lighting. Lambert has also installed new roadway signage along Lambert International Boulevard to improve navigation for motorists to and from the Airport.
