Other highlights from April/May include two successful community tree planting events at Minnie Wood and Barrett Brothers Parks, resulting in 150 new park trees planted by residents and volunteers working in partnership with the Fire Department, Forest ReLeaf and the Forestry Division as part of a Partners for Places sustainability grant. Thank you! During the next phase of that grant project, 6 youth hired as Tree Tenders through STL Youth Jobs will learn urban forestry skills. We also launched the Cities Connecting Children to Nature Equitably planning grant effort with an official site visit by the National League of Cities.
Office of Sustainability Volunteer Needed for Creating Sustainability eNews:
I have had the good fortune to have Matthew Rauschenbach help me in creating and sending these monthly Sustainability eNews. (Thank you, Matthew!) As he is graduating and heading on to his next adventure, I am seeking a new eNews assistant. This individual should be able to work well with Google Docs, be comfortable with using MailChimp, and have an interest in a wide range of sustainability topics. It typically requires 5-10 hours a month, and I’m hoping for a commitment of at least 6 months. Please send me an email if you are interested: wernerc@stlouis-mo.gov.
Summer is here and that means Brightside St. Louis will again offer an Urban Gardening Symposium and kick off of its annual Neighbors Naturescaping grant opportunity. Please take advantage of these terrific programs and materials to beautify places in your community.
Air Quality Forecasts Return to STL: Thanks to the Clean Air Partnership, daily air quality forecasts have resumed. You can receive daily air quality notifications by signing uphere.
South Grand has been named the first Green Dining District in the City. To achieve this certification, at least 25% of the district’s restaurants meet the standards of the Green Dining Alliance (e.g., these restaurants recycle, do not use Styrofoam, reduce water and energy consumption, and try to source locally to reduce their environmental impact).
Dockless Bike Share STL: During the first month of Lime Bike and ofo dockless bike sharing, the program has experienced tremendous success: 27,000+ riders, 48,000+ rides, and 50,000+ miles ridden. Racial equity via targeted distribution of bikes is an important component of this initiative: 20% of bikes are located in the Social Equity and Inclusion Target Neighborhoods, and designated targeted neighborhood associations have a discount code for low income membership.

East-West Gateway is updating its Long-Range Transportation Planningdocument and is accepting input. This plan, updated every four years, offers EWG’s vision and priorities for the St. Louis transportation system including highways, bridges, public transit, bicycle and pedestrian routes.
