Area Hazards

General information on hazards/threats local to the City of St. Louis.

The St. Louis area is vulnerable to two types of hazards, naturally occurring and manmade hazards.  Below is a list of hazards, please note that some hazards could occur as a result of a manmade threat or natural event, for this reason we plan using an "All Hazards" approach.  By using this type of planning, we can be prepared for any type of hazard.

Natural Hazards

Earthquakes
Earthquakes strike suddenly, violently, and without warning at any time of the year

Fire
St. Louis City regularly monitors and responds to Fires

Flooding
Everyone is susceptible to flood damage, whether from storms, water main breaks, or sewer backups

Severe Weather
Severe Weather Warnings are issued when they have actually been observed by spotters or indicated on radar, and is occurring or imminent in the warning area.

Tornado
Tornadoes occur most frequently in the Midwest

Manmade Hazards

Building Collapses/Explosions
Building collapses or explosions can result from structural damage, a gas leak, or sabotage.

Carbon Monoxide
Dangerous levels of carbon monoxide

Disease Outbreaks and Biological Events
St. Louis City regularly monitors and responds to disease outbreaks and biological events

HazMats, Chemical Spills & Radiation
In the event of a major spill authorities will instruct you on the best course of action

Terrorism
By preparing for the hazards listed in this section, you will also be preparing for terrorist attacks

Utility Disruptions
Utility Disruptions can be dangerous, their effects can be averted or diminished with proper precautions
