During the summer season in Antarctica of 2012-2013 six team members from Washington University in St. Louis traveled to the continent to study cosmic rays with a balloon-borne detector called Super-TIGER. Electrical Engineer Richard Bose (r) brought a St. Louis City flag on the mission, flew it on the Ross Ice Shelf, and now on June 5, 2013, presented that flag to St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay.

St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay (l) is joined by Bill Macon, Parade Grand Marshal, and Jason Flowers of the Veiled Prophet organization for a news conference in the Mayor's Office to announce the new route and start time for this year's VP Parade. The parade will step off at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 4 from Olive and 14th Street. Also new this year is a balloon glow beginning at 5 p.m. on July 3 at Kiener Plaza in Downtown St. Louis.

Each year, the John H. Poelker Levee Stone Award recognizes those making significant contributions to Downtown St. Louis. This year, the Partnership for Downtown St. Louis has selected Mayor Francis G. Slay as the recipient of the 2013 Levee Stone Award for his significant contributions to the revitalization of Downtown.
