Crisis Response
Crisis response programs promote the early diversion of individuals in crisis or who are seeking crisis support using an in person and targeted outreach. The goal is to prioritize the use of non-law enforcement responses and interventions when appropriate to address the social, health, and mental health needs of individuals and communities.
Overview
Crisis response teams are designed to address emergencies where mental health or behavioral health is the primary concern, offering a more appropriate alternative to traditional law enforcement intervention. These teams, made up of trained professionals such as mental health counselors and social workers, provide immediate care, de-escalate situations, and connect individuals with long-term support.
By diverting certain 911 calls related to mental health, addiction, or non-violent crises to these specialized teams, communities can ensure that individuals receive the proper care while reducing the strain on police resources. Crisis response promotes safer, more compassionate communities by focusing on care rather than criminalization.
