Nature of Work
This is journey-level work planning, installing, and repairing pipes and piping systems. Incumbents install, repair and maintain various sizes of pipes, pumps and valves, plumbing fixtures, steam boilers and air conditioning units and components such as chillers, steam traps, air handling units, and compressors. Additional responsibilities may include performing preventive maintenance on high pressure boilers, air handling units, cooling towers, large steam pipes, pumps, motors, compressors, electric controls, switches, and valves. Position requires skill in the use of pressure gauges and performing hydrostatic tests; measuring, cutting and threading pipe; brazing, soldering and threading joints; reading blueprints, diagrams and schematics; and working on ladders and catwalks at various heights and depths in vaults and confined spaces, and in adverse environmental conditions. Employees of these positions must be available for 24-hour emergency response.
Completion of a Pipefitter’s apprenticeship program or comparable training program and, two years of recent full-time paid experience in installing and repairing pipes and piping systems.
License: Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of filing application. Please note type of license, number, class, and expiration date on the Employment Application. Must be able to present license at the time of the Oral Interview. At the time of the Oral Interview, applicants who do not possess a Missouri driver’s license will be required to present a “Driving Record Check” from their State’s Department of Motor Vehicles.
Official proof of completion of recognized apprenticeship or comparable program must be submitted at the time of the Oral Interview.
A limited number of applicants may be scheduled for the Oral Interview based on an evaluation of their experience and education as listed on the Employment Application. Please fully describe your qualifying education, experience, and training on the Employment Application. Resumes will not be accepted as a substitute to a fully completed application. Applicants must provide explanation for all changes in employment and any gaps in the employment history. Incomplete and/or carelessly completed applications will not be considered.
MEDICAL: A “Drug Screen” will be administered as part of the medical examination.
Some positions may require candidates to pass a “Character Investigation” prior to appointment. The Director of Personnel may reject the application, or refuse to test and/or eliminate an applicant from an examination as otherwise permitted by law.
