Nature of Work

This is semi-skilled work assisting journeyman trade workers in the performance of their duties. These positions require the operation of automotive equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Two years of recent full-time paid experience performing work assisting journeyman electricians, machinists, plumbers, carpenters, or a related skilled trade; OR, successful completion of a recognized two-year trades program which includes electrical, machinist, plumbing, carpentry or a related skilled trade from an accredited trade school or junior college (training program must be beyond the high school level); OR, two years of recent full-time paid experience in highway construction, new building construction, water or sewer line construction; OR, two years of recent full-time paid experience and current permanent status as a Utility Worker with the City of St. Louis operating and using various tools associated with construction work and groundskeeping; OR, an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Experience should indicate skill in using an air compressor, jackhammer and related construction equipment. Working skill in interpreting and working from sketches, penciled layouts and blueprints. Ability to stoop, bend, climb, and lift.

DRIVER’S LICENSE: Must possess and maintain a valid Missouri driver’s license while employed by the City of St. Louis. Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of filing the application and be able to present license at the time of the Performance Test. Please note type of license, number, class, and expiration date on the Employment Application. Applicants who do not possess a Missouri driver’s license will be required to present a “Driving Record Check” from their State’s Department of Motor Vehicles. Some positions will require a Commercial Driver’s License (Class B) by completion of the working test period.

A transcript of qualifying educational achievement must be submitted with the Employment Application. Applications submitted without proof of qualifying educational achievement will be eliminated. A certificate indicating complete title of program completed may be submitted only if a detailed description of the subject matter covered in the curriculum or program is submitted for review and consideration. The Employment History and Educational/Training History sections of the application must be completed even if you attach a resume. Resumes will not be accepted as a substitute to a fully completed application. List all jobs held over the last 10 years and other pertinent employment beyond 10 years. Provide a complete and detailed description of prior work experience, education, and training. Applicants must provide explanation for all changes in employment and any gaps in their employment history. Attach additional sheets, if necessary, using the same format as the Employment Application. Complete all requested information and explain if an item does not pertain to you. Incomplete and/or carelessly completed applications will not be considered.

During the “PERFORMANCE TEST”, applicants must indicate skill in the following areas:

Truck Driving: Back up dump truck with compressor.

Operate Jackhammer: Remove jackhammer from compressor, hook it up, hammer out 2 foot x 2 foot square of concrete.

Excavate site: Fill a 5 gallon bucket with material dug out and throw into dump truck.

Clean up: Disconnect jackhammer and put it away (back into compressor).

CHARACTER INVESTIGATION: These positions require candidates to pass a “Character Investigation” prior to appointment. The Director of Personnel may reject the application, or refuse to test and/or eliminate an applicant from an examination as otherwise permitted by law.

MEDICAL: A “Drug Screen” will be administered as part of the medical examination.

Examination Components and Their Weights

  • Written Exam: 30%
  • Performance Test: 70%
  • Character Investigation: Pass/Fail
  • Medical Examination: Pass/Fail
  • No waiver of the Residency Requirement will be granted.
