Nature of Work

This is skilled work in the towing and impoundment of vehicles in violation of traffic or other laws. Incumbent will respond to police calls, accidents, arrests, stolen vehicles, and illegally parked cars. Position requires use of winch and dolly wheels, knowledge of city streets, and ability to work in all weather conditions.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Some recent full-time paid experience in the operation of a tow truck. Qualifying experience must have been in the last five years.

License: Must possess a valid driver’s license at time of filing the Employment Application. Candidates must obtain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) as a condition of successfully completing their working test (probationary) period and maintain a Missouri Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B) while employed by the City of St. Louis. Please note type of license, number, class, expiration date, and State where issued on the License section of the Employment Application. Must be able to present license at the time of the Performance Test. At the time of the Performance Test, applicants who do not have a Missouri driver’s license will be required to submit a “Driving Record Check” from their State’s Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Employment and Educational/Training sections of the application must be completed even if you submit a resume. Resumes will not be accepted as a substitute to a fully completed application. Applicants must provide explanation for all changes in employment and any gaps in their employment history. Incomplete and/or carelessly completed applications will not be considered.

CHARACTER INVESTIGATION: These positions require candidates to pass a “Character Investigation” prior to appointment. The Director of Personnel may reject the application, or refuse to test and/or eliminate an applicant from an examination as otherwise permitted by law.

MEDICAL: Candidates will be required to pass a “Drug/Alcohol Screen” as part of the medical examination.

  • Character Investigation: Pass/Fail
  • Medical Examination: Pass/Fail
  • No waiver of the Residency Requirement will be granted.
