Police Dispatcher (Trainees) shall receive the bi-weekly Trainee rate of $1,468.00 upon appointment and serve in a working test (probationary) period. Upon successful completion of their working test period and being granted permanent status, a Police Dispatcher (Trainee) shall receive a title change to Police Dispatcher II and be advanced to the bi-weekly rate of $1,551.00.

Nature of Work

Incumbents in this position receive and evaluate telephone calls to the 9-1-1 call center, dispatch police units and redirect calls to Emergency Medical Services Dispatch, Fire Equipment Dispatch and other appropriate agencies.  Positions require shift, weekend, holiday and mandatory overtime assignments.  Candidates must provide their availability for shift and weekend assignments on the Availability section of the Employment Application.  A shift differential is paid for evening and night work.

Minimum Qualifications

One year of recent full-time paid dispatching experience; OR, one year of experience in emergency public safety services; OR, one year of customer service experience in a call center work environment; OR, an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.  Must be able to type 25 words per minute.  Trainees are required to show proficiency in typing during working test period.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  Previous experience as a Police, Fire, or EMS Dispatcher is preferred.

MEDICAL: Upon acceptance of a job offer, candidates will be required to pass a Drug Screen Test and Physical Examination and successfully complete a Psychological Examination as part of the Medical examination procedure.  Police Dispatchers are subject to random Drug Screen and Alcohol Tests without advance notice as a condition of their employment.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS:  To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of his/her DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application. The Director of Personnel may, in his discretion, accept alternate documentation.
