Position Specifications

Incumbent in this position is responsible for providing fiscal, budgetary, personnel, and policy guidance and operational oversight throughout the divisions making up the Department of Public Safety as well as providing advice and counsel to the Director of Public Safety and divisional appointing authorities, and authority to act in the absence of the Director of Public Safety. This position assists the Director in planning and implementing programs and developing policies affecting department divisions; helps in reviewing and evaluating the present operating structure, polices, and procedures to improve performance, employee morale, and the quality of service to the community; keeps the Mayor and City officials informed of department progress, difficulties, and accomplishments; reviews all public notifications on available grants for Public Safety funding and identifies new revenue sources; oversees inmate billing; and serves as contract monitor and supervises third party administration of alarm ordinance billing and tracking.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree in Public or Business Administration, Criminal Justice, or a directly related field; plus seven years of professional experience in a high level public safety management capacity.  OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS: To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of their DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or upon request. The Director of Personnel may, in their discretion, accept alternate documentation.

CITY RESIDENTS PREFERENCE POINTS: City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points.  City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
