Meet Alexander Weir, a Neighborhood Improvement Specialist with the Neighborhood Stabilization Division (NSD) under the Department of Public Safety. Working directly with residents in the community, Alex regularly steps into complex, high-pressure situations to guide residents through moments of crisis. For Alexander, navigating these demanding challenges requires deep empathy, active listening, and a strong sense of team spirit.

What does a typical day look like for you as a Neighborhood Improvement Specialist?

I get to work with residents one-on-one and try to resolve situations they need help with. And it gets me out in the neighborhoods. I enjoy that, so I don't have to spend all day just in one office.

What skills or qualities does a Neighborhood Improvement Specialist require?

We need to be empathetic to what people are going through, especially in North City, with the tornado zone. We have to listen, be engaged at all times, and try to find solutions to some incredibly complex problems. So it's very demanding, but rewarding.

How would you describe the workforce and being a part of the NSD team?

The city has a lot of openings. The city welcomes all ages, types, and orientations and has a very welcoming atmosphere. It's a great city to serve, a lot of history and character, and so we need good people. Every day is very different. It keeps it interesting, to say the least. You never really know what you're going to be dealing with. Some things can be very trying and stressful, because a lot of people are in a crisis, and they need our help.

Do you have a message for your fellow City colleagues?

Keep your chin up. Keep the team spirit going. We're all under pressure. We are understaffed, but we all do the best we can. We try to work with each other for the benefit of this great city.

Do you have a message for the people of the City of St. Louis?

Keep believing in your city. This city has so much untapped potential.
