Position Specifications

Incumbents in this position are responsible for handling complex civil litigation matters at the trial and appellate levels in both state court and federal court in the area of employment litigation and civil rights. Duties include researching and preparing for trials before judges and juries, conducting discovery, arguing motions and participating in all phases of said trials. This position provides legal advice and opinions to City departments, working directly with department heads, commissioners, and members of the Mayor’s staff.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from a school of law approved by the American Bar Association; current membership in the Missouri Bar in good standing or licensure in another state with eligibility for reciprocity in Missouri; plus seven years of complex civil litigation experience in the area of municipal law at the administrative level and at the trial and appellate levels in state and federal court. Qualifying experience must include knowledge of municipal and real estate transactions.

Documentation of license to practice law must be submitted with the Employment Application or upon request.

VETERAN'S PREFERENCE POINTS:  To be eligible for veteran's preference points, the applicant must submit a copy of their DD 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty with the Employment Application or upon request. The Director of Personnel may, in their discretion, accept alternate documentation.

CITY RESIDENTS PREFERENCE POINTS: City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points.  City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
