The St. Louis Board of Aldermen Participation in the Appointment of the New Sheriff

Summary

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE BOARD OF ALDERMEN OF THE CITY OF ST. LOUIS AS FOLLOWS: 1. The Board of Aldermen declares that it must participate, for the reasons stated above, in any process to fill a permanent vacancy in the Office of the Sheriff occurring more than nine months before the next general election. Furthermore, the full Board of Aldermen, including the President, should be a party to any declaratory judgment petition filed regarding the authority to fill such a vacancy; and 2. The Board of Aldermen affirms its intention to engage collaboratively with the Mayor and the Comptroller in any appointment process that may occur. 3. The Board of Aldermen expects that any future discussions, procedures, timelines, legal strategy, or legal proceedings developed regarding an interim sheriff appointment include the full Board from the outset. 4. The Clerk of the Board of Aldermen shall transmit a copy of this Resolution to the Mayor, the Comptroller, and the Interim City Counselor upon its passage.
