The Plan Exam Section consists of licensed design professionals who are responsible for reviewing construction drawings for compliance with current building codes. The current codes in effect for the City of St. Louis as of December 1, 2010 may be reviewed here.

A plan examiner is available at the "Hot Spot" desk in the One-Stop-Shop for permits in Room 425, City Hall. Plans for smaller, residential projects such as decks, porches, and room additions may be approved over the counter while commercial projects and larger residential projects require more extensive review.

Major changes to a structure will, in most cases, require drawings with an architect's or engineer's seal. Some improvements to existing structures may be approved based solely on a hand-drawn sketch.

Guidelines for drawing residential plans may be found here.
