Sidewalk Permit

A sidewalk permit is required for constructing a new sidewalk or reconstructing an existing sidewalk.

Overview

Property owners are required to maintain their sidewalks in good repair.

The City of St. Louis offers owners a cost sharing option through the 50/50 sidewalk program. If your property is eligible and you agree to participate, the City will split the cost of sidewalk repair with you. You do not need a sidewalk permit for this.

If you plan to maintain your sidewalk at your own expense, you will need to obtain a sidewalk permit using the method below.

 

Preparation

Prepare to answer the following questions:

  • Street address
  • Type of sidewalk project:
    • repair existing sidewalk
    • reconstruct existing sidewalk, as is
    • widen existing sidewalk
    • construct new sidewalk - none existing
    • narrow existing sidewalk
    • install ADA ramps only
  • Commercial or residential property?
  • If corner property, name of side street
  • Square footage of area being repaired or replaced
  • If there are meters at the blocked area, how many?
    • List all meter numbers you will need to rent
  • Your contact information

Fees

Sidewalk repair permits cost $25 for a residential property or $50 for a commercial property.

You cannot be reimbursed through the 50-50 sidewalk program for any work done at your expense.

What to Expect

After submitting your application online, you will receive an application ID number as well as a confirmation e-mail. You may then monitor the status of your application by going to our Check Status of Street Permit Application page. 

Please allow at least one week for review and approval of requests to completely close the street or for work along a commercial street.

Upon permit being approved, you should come to 1900 Hampton to pay for and pick up your permit. At this time we only accept cash or check. If there is sufficient lead time before your event, you can mail in payment and we will mail or fax your permit to you.

Additional Information

All barricades are to be provided by the permittee and must include reflective tape and flashers during all hours of darkness.
